ok...i want to use cname..so that his.mydomain.com shows his content with my url....now...if this hits a duplicate filter who gets the penalty?...just his.mydomain.com or would www.mydomain.com get the penalty too?

You need to do this? I'd assume worst case scenario that Googlebot would just drop both domains. What you are suggesting is technically spamming.

but what about all the big hotel sites. They all connect to the same databases and pick up the same content. Why arent they penalised then?

Is the content identical?

I'm linking to another site's database. They allow your url to show instead of theirs. The content is used by several sites and so will be identical.

as far as i can see..looking at other sites that do this...google just greys out the pages but the sites themselves are not affected..
