Googlebot searching for pages do not exist

Why would it?

Googlebot has been to one of my sites looking for specific page names that do not (nor ever) existed.

Why would it do this? My initial reaction was that perhaps someone was spamming the Add url with submissions, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

Any ideas on why this would happen?

you sure some other site has NOT linked to you incorrectly, and Google is following from there.

I am NOT too clued up in this area, so forgive me if my reply is total b@#X*

It could be due to submissions, IP address changes (i.e. another domain points at your IP and your server responds with content) or a rare Google error, but as Shak suggests the common reason is people linking to the wrong URLs.

I have about 4 pages that googlebot keeps tying for. All 4 been gone for at least two years but are still linked to by sites that don't respond to emails asking to change/delete the link. There is one file g comes for about 4 times every month.
