OK I'll admit it. I am thinking of buying some "text link advertising" on a site that has a lot of high PR pages. There is a monthly fee they will charge for this text link. What day of the month (approx) would it be best to start this campaign? For google update and PR reasons. How late in a month can i start and still expect to be indexed for the upcoming update? Thanks for any help you can provide.

And, what good reason is there for us to help those buying and selling PageRank?

Well sorry for bringing this up. In my niche all the top sites are doing it with 2000+ high pr backlinks. I really have no way to compete with my 100+ "real backlinks". I wish it hadnt come to this, but i dont stand a chance in google otherwise.

cheater, you no doubt already know that buying PR is a no no, and if its seen that you are, you can get a penalty to play with ;)

IMO, any link is preferred ASAP, paid or not

If your niche is dominated by sites with 2000+ high PR backlinks, my guess is that you'd do better with Adwords than thinking about paying for a high PR link. I think you overestimate the benefit that 1 high PR backlink will get you with Google when you are going up against competetion like this.

I have mostly done PPC for my site so far. It was doing ok in the beginning. All of a sudden my conversions fell in the gutter and i was having days in the red. I have lowered my prices and get little traffic now in order to be able to afford it.

This is not 1 link but approx 2000 high PR backlinks. The same thing these other guys are doing. They buy a link on a huge site thats 2000+ pages all indexed with high pr in google. The link is on EVERY PAGE of the site.

I have played fair and have 100+ backlinks obtained "legally". My rankings at google are nonexistent and the pages are optimized well IMHO. I hate to be a bad webmaster, but not as much as as i hate to be a broke webmaster ;)

Just wanted to get some opinions and weigh out my options, didnt really plan on jumping into this anytime real soon if at all.

You are convinced that those other sites are beating you just because of their PR, yet you do not know when you need to have your links to be in time for the update?

You also mention that you had a drop in your conversion rate. Why don't you concentrate on that? Get all the basics down, before you start trying the fancy stuff. Follow the forum for a few days and spot a few of the "How is this low PR site beating a high PR site" threads. Head over to some of the other forums now and then and pick their brains.

What will you do if those 2000+ links are not enough? What if one of your competitors decides to report you for spamming? Is your site totally clean otherwise? Since you seem to be in a spammy field, do you think google is likely to give you the benefit of the doubt if they do a hand check?

Big Problem

2000 links from one domain, even of a high PR, may not help much. Google tends to discount multiple links from the same domain.

May be you need to look at the problem from another direction.

Is there content that would interest the same people you are targeting? This may bring in the same traffic.

You may need to step back from looking at this simply from a search engine battle and look at the marketing options.
