I have noticed as probably everybody has that for some search terms Google will return a sites page plus a sub page, for example for a search term of "blue widgets" the widgets homepage followed by an internal page on blue widgets is returned. Why does it do this? why not just return the blue widgets page. As far as I can see a possibly reason for this is that the blue widgets internal page has inbound links.

Sometimes the site homepage is the best ranked result for the query and its own subpage is the second best ranked result, with all other sites ranking less highly than both pages. That's all.

If my site was www.bluefurrywidgets.com and I had a subpage on blue widgets with buttons, these pages might well rank first and second for a search for blue widgets, with www.redwidgets.com coming in a close third. Subpages are indented in search results if they are the second page given from a single domain, and are followed with a link to see all results from this domain.
