I'm just starting to learn about SEO. Is there any way to check the page rank of sites without installing the Google toolbar?

Basically: yes.

You might also check out the Google directory, sites listed there also show a PR bar.
A good introductory read I'd recommend is this:

I finally found the the FAQ with info on page rank so I think I understand now. Since I don't use the toolbar and the site's not (yet) listed on DMOZ, it seems impossible to see the page rank. Is this correct?

I submitted the site to DMOZ yesterday but will be a while before it shows up (and I'm not sure how to tell if it will be added or not).

If there is any way to tell the PR without the toolbar or a DMOZ listing, plz let me know.

I just realized that the site isn't listed in Google directory - it just lists in search results. So time for more reading before posting more silly questions.

Something to think about: Even if you were listed in the Google directory, the PageRank indicator would apply only to your home page.

This seems strange. The Google toolbar gives my main page a PR of 5. It's been 5 for quite a while. But when I look in the Google Directory there is no PR bar beside the page listed (same page that is PR 5 in the toolbar.) Anyone have any idea why this might be?

I also noticed that my description is old, and not up to the current dmoz description (i am a dmoz editor and revised the description aabout 2 weeks ago). Is the lack of a PR in Google directory in any way related to the status in dmoz?

This is because the DMOZ dump hasn't happened for many months now and as a consequence all the listings in the Google Directory haven't been updated since then.. could be a while still before that changes..
