Get the site listed in DMOZ/The Open Directory and then it'll be in the Google Directory which takes its info direct from DMOZ.

Just as an FYI, ODP has experienced technical difficulties in exporting its content to Google since last fall, so the Google Directory is several months out of whack with dmoz.org (even in the best of times, it was always several weeks behind). This shouldn't stop you from submitting to ODP of course, since Google and other spiders do index the directory, and there are many smaller niche directories which scrape dmoz.org rather than using the RDF method as Google does.

If you have a link to your site from a site that is indexed then google should find your site. The more links you have the more chance you have of being included. Also, go to [google.com...]

I am somewhat a newbie myself but this is my understanding.

Here is the way I found to get found by Google fast and to move up in the rankings fast (if you're willing to spend some money).

If you have a local newspaper web site (doesn't necessarily have to be local) that has good ranking, take out a banner ad. Assuming the cost is not too far out of line, and assuming a high ranking, this will get you noticed and indexed by Google within a short time. Once you are going and start getting others to link to you, you can drop the ad if you want. The ad itself will bring in visitors, but will start to decline after a time.
