I was wondering if people use the 'Search: pages from...' in country googles or if they just enter the country as search word? Are there any stats?

E.g. enter search phrase 'widgets' and choose the radio button 'pages from the UK' or enter search phrase 'widgets UK'?

i personally user the first option (select the option in google), because i believe this filters on country specifications of the websites google indexes, so it's a better choice.

but i'm using web-wide search a 1000 times, and 1 time country specific search only.

[inventory.overture.com...]

check for "uk", then check for some of the listed items without the "uk"

I would say a small but important percentage adds the UK.

As for which percentage uses the "pages from.."

this is the only data I ever saw: [webmasterworld.com...]

but then not all countries are as chauvinistic as others ;)

Vita, you are not implying that the french are a tiny bit more patriotic (chauvinistic sounds too negative) than other people, are you? ;)

From the other thread:

- 22% only want French language sites as results
- 11% only want French sites.

I suppose the percentage of whatever language sites is similar for all non-english countries. The 11% French sites seem quite low to me, particularly if you consider the patriotism... However, I guess lots of people don't really look at the options and just enter their searches.

Any different thoughts?

At least in Google.fr you have the choice of "Pages francophones" (french pages). Choice wise, the poor English are discriminated by Google at Google.co.uk, they do not have their own language anymore..;)

In other words the English have no opportunity to select English only pages not necessarily hosted in the UK or with a .co.uk tld.

Being somewhat of a "super searcher" I always check both the default serps and the ones on local language. From a professional viewpoint I love it when my local sites pop up in the first place on the default search. IMO most users don't use the search in local language option, but on some phrases like "web design", I can't rank my local sites high, so the local search is certainly important there.

Once people figure out how to choose the local search, we have a much better chance of getting the local users as well - specially on generic phrases like the one above.
