Suggestion: Google News Search box for Sites

Google currently gives webmasters the option to put a Google Search Box [google.com] with logo on their web-sites.

But I was thinking, wouldn't it be great if webmasters could offer visitors a "Google News Search" box on their web-sites as another option?

I am sure any number of us here could write the code necessary to do it, but I suggest Google should sanction it first, create this option for webmasters and to post it on their site.

For one of my web-sites in particular and several others, I would like to offer viewers the option to find the latest news and stories under whatever related keyword brought them to my site.

Oh sure, I/we could just add a hyper-link to their news page, but that is not classy enough, IMO.

Anyway, I think it would be cool. I would like to hear what others think, good or bad. Who knows, maybe Google will take the suggestion to heart if enough people like the idea.

Changing the existing Google search box form code they supply from:

<FORM method="GET" action="http://www.google.com/custom">

to

<FORM method="GET" action="http://groups.google.com/custom">

gives you the ability to select the groups tab with the same search terms. May not be 100% to what you're looking for but it's functional.

Thanks for that suggestion. I was thinking of something else along those lines as far as "do it yourself" possibilities and I know that many here could put something together.

If I was only thinking of myself, I could put something like that together. However, I think it would be a nice resource for Google to offer all webmasters which is why I began this thread.

Also, I think Google should sanction something like this and come up with nice logo/look for a Google News Search box.

I would guess this is maybe an idea that Google is thinking about, but maybe waiting for the end of the Beta, and going through other implications such as copyright etc. and relationships with the press.

I know we used a similar thing for AV news a few years back, before they moved to making all their news via moreover's increasingly sponsor-generated news feeds. They may have changed it since.

Visitors did like it. We hard coded the main breaking news stories of the day as keyword queries that we thought our readers would be interested in as well.

google's news search is second to none, it would be great to incorporate it.

Can you hazard a guess as to how long it will remain in beta? How long has it been since they added it?
