I have huge jumps in backlinks today. On one page I have worked hard to get added related links but the other I have done nothing to promote and it still has a big jump.

It looks to me like there are more links from small personal websites. I wonder if the difference is a higher PR on these sites, perhaps a result of the PR jump that occurred last month.

We're always trying to crawl the web more and score it better than we already do. Glad you are seeing nice results for your site!

Woops, that was short lived. Now it's back to the link number from last month. Hopefully the additional links will come back. I like the idea of the 'little guy or gal's' links counting; the ones who have found a site they like and just linked it.

GoogleGuy, could it be that inbound links we can get *during* the update as well as tweaked pages, adding new pages etc could be effective at the end of the update? What I mean is, will they be taken into account?

I'm glad you're seeing this, Anne. You deserve the recognition. Unfortunately I've been seeing the opposite. I've dropped from 790 to 718 backlinks in the face of adding around 40 new pages.

This hasn't harmed my position, so I'm assuming that the links are still there and having an effect, but they're not showing up in the link: search. I'd thought that there must have been an overall dampening of PR, bringing more sites below the PR4 threshold, but that would be the opposite effect to what you're seeing.

What are other people noticing?

I think some of the changes I made to my site were too late for the December deep crawl, so I'm not making any major changes for the next month. I'll no doubt add some new material and cultivate a few more quality links, but that'll be it.

jjdesigns: it's more or less true. There may be some reshuffling.

I'm still getting fluctuation on my back links from last month and the higher number of backlinks I saw yesterday. It's driving me nuts.

I'm also noticing that I've lost ground on my search phrase "widget history". Three sites with their page titled "Widget History" have gone ahead if my homepage in the serps. Google must be giving the fact there are no other words in the title some extra credit. I'm still in the top ten though and hope my more interesting title will attract visitors.

In my single search word "widgeting" that I'm working on I have gone from 43 on www to 22 on www2 and www3 so I seem to be making progress there. I don't seem to have a prayer on "widgets or widget" so I'm concentrating on "widgeting".

How I hate this wait to see how it will all come out! I've got to get out in the real world today.

Hang in there, it will settle down soon :) My site went from PR4 to PR5 and doubled backlinks, I'm very happy too!

The new backlinks that are added during the current update are from the monthly crawl done during the beginning of December. Any new back links added now before this month's crawl will probably show up during the next update around the end of this month. Any backlinks added after the regular monthly crawl (which may have already started) will not get added in until the following update around the end of February.

Your tweaked pages/new pages have a chance of being added if they're picked up by that busy little freshbot. If you've any last minute changes to make, now's the opportune time so that it'll get picked up during this month's regular crawl.

You can check your backlinks and SERP's at www-ex.google.com as this data center is updated with the new index. www2 and www3 has in the past shown different results up until the time that all of the data centers are updated.

I lost another 400 backlinks this month, for about a loss of over 600 the past couple months, and it's hard for me to check with a couple thousand to start with, it hasn't appeared to affect my page rank, even though I was hoping it would go up since I added some quality links again, sigh. I'll never get a 7, it's like a holy grail, hehe.

The fresh bot has spent some time with me quite a bit lately. One question: I've added new content to several pages but it appears they leave the title tag alone. From what I have been reading this sounds like it won't be given any attention or seen until the next dance?

If anyone has any tips on this one it would be appreciated immensely;)

Backlinks for me went from 358 to 616 :)

I would say that there were about 30-40 new external inbound links added and the majority of the incread was internal links. With the higher pagerank for the site (I'm assuming), I believe thats the main cause of the increase of backlinks for internal pages since they are now above the min. PR4 threshold.
