When I type www.amazon.com into the IE address bar I am in fact taken to:

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home.html/some-numbers

which greets me by name. Looks like I, for one, cannot get to the "real" amazon home page, which I am sure has a much higher PR.

By setting up a virtual 'amazon.com' host on my Apache web server/proxy, I was able to see what PR the Google Toolbar reported for the Amazon root pages...

At the moment both [amazon.com...] and [amazon.com...] have a PR of 9

Ooops, I noticed the same thing today...

When i type in [amazon.com...] i get a long url when the page loads...and shows the PR of 3...i was like shocked...which is obviously unbelivable!

See why Google doesn't like redirects? It gets confoozed. Imagine if they had just 1 landing page up front - the PR would be like Spinal Tap's guitar amps - this one goes up to 11.
