Off topic sub directories...

...for the purpose of getting inbound links

Hi all

I thought that id run this one by everyone:

Just got a link request from a web design / SEO company for one of directory sites.

They have set up a sub directory with a photo gallery for the region my directory covers and asked for a link.

I had a look around their site and theyve got a handful of these "projects".

Now the gallery is pretty nice, but each page has a "created by" link at the bottom, so it seems to be for the purposes of feeding PR to lower pages.

Im gonna tell them no, cos i dont want SEO adverts embedded in my tourism section, but i just wanted to find out some background on this.

Has anyone came across this tatic before? Is it considerate to be legitimate (seems off topic to me and therefore a no no!)?

Cheers
JOAT :)

PS i stuck this in the Google News section cos the SEO company were verging on being obsessed with Google - focused a lot of articles about Google and how the big G provides lots of traffic, etc and had a lot of links to Google (toolbar, spam report, etc).

Thats why i figured that this was for the purposes of PR and not a genuine project, and therefore im running away! :)

<added>come to think of it - they most likely frequent this site ;) </added>

JOAT, what's the topic/theme of the root directory? Is the gallery part of their design site or a topical directory site strictly for locales? And is it a /subdirectory/ or a third level domain? What's the PR of the index page and sub-pages?
