This is really weird

Every time I achieve the #1 position on Google on a certain keyword, the very next time Google re-checks sites (usually every week), my page that was just #1 disappears off of the face of Google completely. However, if I change my page around a little bit and Google re-checks my site, I am once again the #1 listing until Google re-checks my site again. This is really wierd, especially because my other listings (my index page, etc.) are all still there in their same position (which is on page2 of the search results). I think the person who had the number 1 position before I came along and beat him is pagejacking my one page, but I don't know how to tell for sure. Does anyone know what is happening? Is it just a Google error or what?

It sounds like you are experiencing Google freshness.

Do a WebmasterWorld search for 'google fresh', lots to read up on!

And, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Hi Wesman, welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]! :)

Your post really belongs in the Google News forum, kinda... If you follow the above link, it will "introduce" you to how we do things at this board.

Why "kinda?" We refer to what your site is experiencing at Google as "Everflux" and there have been many discussions about it. Try using the "site search" link at the top of your screen. Regular members usually appreciate it if you try to limit your questions to things not already discussed. It's not always possible of course, but do the best you can! :)

Again, welcome!

<added>It looks as if msr986 types faster than me! We were posting at the same time I think. Try searching for either or both ;) </added>

Sorry! I am new to this kind of stuff and I thought the "cloaking" category was appropriate because I thought that was the only way to prevent this from happening! Thanks for your help.

Freshbot very likely.

Don't worry. It happened to my pages last month and got so paranoid that I emailed everyone and initiated 10 different threads. Almost hired a body guard too...

Just routine stuff.

One thing you will notice with the "minty fresh" listings is they are often absurdly high serp when they first appear. I have had individual pages of mine outrank entire sites devoted to the same content for 24-48 hours, which they really shouldn't.
