ZU is for Zurich in Switzerland. The first one in Europe I think? And the first one outside US I think! Seem to be brand new? Hum! Switzerland is a neutral country! Any chance that is a response from a political US concern with war? ;-)

I would think that if they are foreign servers such as Switzerland then they would be in some non english language. My guess is that they are test servers. Maybe google is about to unleach a new function to the googlebot to kill of .com/KW-KW2-KW3/KW4-KW5-KW6/KW7.html spam pages - I wish

They are the google datacenters - most of them have been around for ages - the one in zurich was added about 6 months ago to cater for search demand in europe. When you place a search at www.google.com the result is actually returned from one of these datacenters.

You'll notice that during the update - search traffic gradually increases (or decreases) as each of the datacenters is updated with the new index. A way of testing if the update is fully completed is by running a search on each of these domains.

They have been up for a long time, and are not test servers to my knowledge, but database centers, so all searches isn't comming in to one center, and during the update the transer the new index to the different servers, the first time that they were known to the public was about exactly this time a year ago (i know because i was the one who found one :) )
