How to discover bad links or PR0 after the fact

Anybody have any magic potions?

Let's suppose ...

You find a great site with loads of relevant content for your customers. You link to it and the link remains for two years.

Suddenly, you discover that your PR has dropped radically and you start scouring your site trying to find the reason. You discover that what was once a really good, "clean" site is now using invisible links, invisible text, sneaky redirects, etc.

This has not happened to me, but I can easily see that it could happen to anyone at any time.

Is there a quick way to do a monthly check of all your links to determine what the PR status is of the sites you are linking to? Is this something one must do manually all the time?

Paranoia is setting in as I am about to start a new links campaign. Checking each site manually is very time consuming.

Liane, one or two bad links amongst a large number shouldn't hurt your site. Otherwise, there would be a cascade effect and pretty soon the whole web would be PR0.

I suppose some individuals have developed techniques for link PR checking, but there's not a commercial solution available. Google has strict policies about automated queries and use of the toolbar info. Manual checking is your best bet for now. Use that process to keep tabs on the site content, too - you may be surprised that some of your linked sites have changed ownership and sport entirely different content than what you linked to originally.

I was afraid of that rogerd and thanks for the info. Its very reassuring to know that one or two PR0 links won't have a tremendous effect on my site.

I suppose I will do some spot checks more frequently though. I am about to start linking to non-competitive sites in the same industry and to be honest, I don't trust most of the people in my industry. So many of them use any devious method they can to climb to the top of the SERPS!
