Also does anybody know WHY when you type in a page xyz.com it might show this page not ranked by google and if you type www.xyz.com (with the 'www') it has a ranking?

...because xyz.com and www.xyz.com are two different URLs, and need not lead to the same content unless you want them to.
www.xyz.com is a subdomain of xyz.com, just as home.xyz.com, or whatever.xyz.com would be. To Google, they are different "pages".
In order to maximize your page rank and avoid duplicate content issues, you should be consistent in the URL that you use internally, and the ones that you ask others to link to. Pick one or the other - with or without "www." - and stick with it.
