Why is it that googlebots visits to pages are in a very strange pattern, if in a pattern at all - i would have thought that a bots best bet of crawling all the pages on a site would be a get to a page, and systematicly follow all the links from top to bottom, excluding ones it has already been to - but wow - looking at my logs i see that the little fella is jumping about the site like a crazed being, shifted between sections, sometimes bottom link, sometimes top, sometimes none at all...why does it behave like this - it makes me wonder how much it may be missing out...

I doubt they have one instance of a bot crawling your site.
It probably gets all links from a page and stores the info somewhere. After that, the next available bot instance picks a link from the list and retrieves it.
So they probably just maintain a pool of unvisited pages and update it asynchronously.

I think that these are bots riding links from different sources, so naturally, they are many different bots.

fair enough - the site i spoke about has many incoming links from all over - a new site which is only just in this month is being crawled now - and its to the letter - every line in the log till its done most of the pages...

Thanks
