Pointers Please Newbie Q

Hi having just got one site online last week and have another one to do...I'm now ready for Optimisation tweaking..

I've tried to read some of the threads here but am finding them too advanced for my needs, I'm completely new to this SEO thing..

A voluntary site that I'm working requires I do everything, design, programmig..etc..no SEO people for me!

Got the site on-line and have been "tweaking it" as per all the frantic posts in the last week :)

I've got a robots.txt in place (validated per SEW)..

I'll just ask if some of the more frequent visitors here could give me some links to previous posts regarding these "early day" questions to save asking them again..

One quick question though, I have a doorway page (no spam) just one link leading to the site proper..different directory structure...will this cause a problem?
