Does this mean I'm likely to be permanently in when the dance settles down (and when will that be?).
i heard checkin the back links to a site like yahoo.com is a good indicator of a new index etc. on www.google.com it comes to 654,000, but on www2 and 3 it comes to 632,000 - shouldn't the number be higher on www2 and 3 where the fresher indexes are held?
i say this, because a current listing of one of my sites is on www2 + 3, but not on www at all.
any ideas?
I have been working for the past several weeks trying to get all my site ready for the next deep crawl. Now that it has come the crawl is reverting to an old cache Google must have had of my site from weeks ago before I started any of this. As a result it indexed all sorts of old links and dropped me from #20 that I had worked up to thru the fresh updates lately on a huge search term for me to off the list after the deep crawl.
Is it normal for Google to put way outdated versions of pages up during a deep crawl. My log shows only like 20 hits from GoogleBot, which is normal daily activity. Also, I have noticed that many of my competitors for this same key phrase have their updated holiday version of their pages showing.
My PR is averaging at 4 lately if that makes a difference.
It may or may not be higher depending on the number of backlinks that were found.

Good! The next deep crawl may have already started for the sites with higher PR and I'm looking for Googlebot to show up soon :)
And welcome to WebmasterWorld. The current update is not quite complete, so you may be seeing both the old and new indexes until things settle down. There's quite a bit of information related to the Google Update, Page Rank, Googlebot and more in the WebmasterWorld Google Knowledgebase V2 [webmasterworld.com].
Here's how it looks. On my site or mysite.net I get a PR of 4, but when it goes to the mysite.net/default.asp it suddenly drops to a 2. Wait I think I just answered my own question as I have the asp set up with links within the site if that makes any sense...In any event should I be concerned with this asp thingie? Any help is thankful. Great site and a super learning experience.

I'm not Ann, but .. use the site search at the top of the page for "WPG". There are at least 15 pages of threads about WPG and Google's dislike of automated tools for querying their db.
It would be really wise if you read these before continuing to use this tool with Google!
It's normal for Google to put up out dated pages from the early November deep crawl during the end of November index update. Your fresh results will reassert themselves in the next few days, and will permanently enter the index next update/end of December after being deepcrawled the beginning of December.

If one person gains, another will lose. That stands to reason. Every site can't come up number one.
It reminds me of a slogan that I saw on a school building in Texas a few years ago:

If every student excels, then they're all, well .. average.
Back on topic, the dance is over, right? I haven't seen any PR or SERP changes on any of my sites since this morning.

A #1 is like a pat on the back and a hearty "well done!" from the SE world...something most of us don't hear enough of.
That said, I feel like I get more traffic from a page two listing....this is from my own surfing habits as I will look through two to three pages of results before deciding on one to click thru to, rarely will I click on the first thing that pops up in a search.
Getting in the top ten to thirty will give you some good traffic.

That's something that I always thought but a site that was penalised on the last update has had a massive drop in traffic, but I amazed how many people are clicking through to the 5/6 pages on SERPs, not that I'm complaining
I often browse through the first page, and then click through to page 4 or 5, but I've always figured I was weird, and not representative of the average searcher.
It sometimes amazes me, though, when I follow up on my logs to find that people have found my site using improbable keywords in which my site came out on the 30th page or more. I figure they must not have gone through them in chronological order.

Are you sure they don't have Google set like me to display 100 results by default?
