stemming and punctuation

As I understand it, Google doesn't use "stemming." In other words, if I have a page that includes the words "European" and "widgetlike," Google won't extract the "Europe" and "widget" roots as keywords.

Question: How does punctuation affect this? I'm curious to know if Google recognizes all of the following character strings as the keyword widget:

widget
"widget"
'widget'
widget,
widget?
widget.
widget!
widget."

(and so on)
