I had a PR6 site for some months now because I had a PR7 site that linked to mine. Now I'm down to PR3 though that link from the PR7 site is still persistent.
What does this mean?

It's very hard to know which PageRank you have due to the new update, i would say wait a few days and then you will know better.
Also there isn't a golden rule that say if you have a page with a PR of 7 linking to you, you will get a PR of 6.

There is a lot of jumping around still going on. For example during the last update one of my site's ranking went from a 6 to 1 to a 5 back to a 1 then settled on a 7 three days later. Keep the faith :)

yeah, the strange thing just is that the google directory has been updated with that lower pagerank also ...

It's too early to know what PR you'll end up with after the October update. One of my sites has changed PR twice in the time that it takes to do as many refreshes. Let it stabilize first, and you'll have a better idea.

The directory part doesn't sound too promising, foy. Maybe the PR7 site was down or your link was inaccessible at some crucial point? I'm assuming the link is a plain HTML link on a page that itself is still PR7... Of course, one link doesn't guarantee success.
Anything going on on your own site - spammy stuff, cloaking, zeus directory, crosslinking with other sites, etc. - that might get you zapped?

no nothing at all. I checked sites that have a link from that PR7 site too and noticed that they also dropped down to a PR of 3 thought they were PR6 before...like mine ...
