I run a website for a small company that's been online for almost two years.
Prior to 10/28/2002, doing a search on our URL returned a number of sites that had nothing to do with us, but our site was nowhere in the listing. Also at that time a search by any of our keywords turned up nothing.
After 10/28/2002, a search based on any of our keywords would show us, but a search on our URL still returned losts of other sites besides us.
After last night's (10/31/2002) update, things got worse. Many of our keyword listings disappeared. Also, a search by our URL no longer returns other sites, it just returns "Sorry, no information is available for the URL."
We have some major sites that link to us, including the Delta Airlines and America West websites, and the pages on thier sites that link to us appear prominently in almost all of our keyword listings, but we are nowhere. What the heck is going on here?
I have installed the Google toolbar, and, according to this, our home page has a page rank of 6 (sometimes 7 - it seems to change at various times during the day). I understand from other postings that this is not entirely accurate. Is there another place I can look to find our true page rank?
Other questions:
It appears that Google hits our no-cookies page when crawling us. Is there any special stuff I should be doing in the no-cookies page to enhance our listing? Also, since it hits our no-cookies page, does anything I do on our regular home page (keywords, robot tags, etc.) have any effect? And if it doesn't hit our cookies-requiring home page, why does that page return a 6 or 7 page rank on the Google toolbar?
I have seen a lot on this site about how your ranking is effected both by pages linking to you and by pages you link to. The way I understand it is that your ranking is determined by pages linking to you, but your likelyhood of getting "banned" can be affected by who you link to (in other words, don't link to any PR0 pages). Also, that a white bar on the Google toolbar means PR0 while a grey bar is something different. Is this all true?
Sorry for all the questions. Like I said, I've spent a lot of time trying to read what's already here, but due to the volume of stuff, I don't know if I've read everything.
Now that things have settled down on the update, what did you turn up?
The fact that you mention cookies, could be important. How does the site interact with a user that doesn't support cookies? How are the cookies being set?
Google can't get into a site which requires cookies to enter.
for example your site check to see if cookies are enable (google say NO COOKIES ENABLE HERE 8~)
what does your site say
a) come in and have a look around
b) Stop - with out cookies you go no further he's how to set cookies in ie,nn and opera click here once you have set your cookies.
googlebot never sets it's cookies therefore never gets in.
