hi all,

anyone know if, when google follows a link counting script, e.g.:

http:://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/linkcount.cgi?=myclient

it reads this URL only, or would the real domain www.myclient.com be counted.

the reason i ask is because some of our clients like to know how many people click on their link on our pages, but would still like the benefit of the PR given to them by the link from our site.

thanks

They wont get any PR from a link like that.

I think (unless you have a googlebot restrictive robots.txt in your cgi-bin) that it will try to pick out the destination url. This is just conjecture- hopefully someone who is sure will post.

Direct vs. indirect links makes no big difference for Googlebot.

80-90% of my backward links this month are from sites where I have banners (linked through a banner counter).

I think if these links are included in backward links count, they may enter the PR calculation as well.

They won't enter in your backward links and they won't count for PR. Google may be able to get the domain out of the cgi bin and index it based on that- but the links won't count for PR or backlinks.

I have had a link from a sponsorship, which was an indirect link. It showed up in the backward links and it counted A LOT in PR.

I've never experienced any PR from these kind of indirect links- if I did I would have numerous links from pr 8 and pr9 pages- and I think I would have noticed if I did... ;)

My link was from a static URL. I haven't had much succes linking from one dynamic URL to another and I don't think indirect links would help
