After being watching '657,000' for hours, I wonder: is public GoogleDance really necessary?

I mean, Google guys must recalculate the PageRank of every webpages... right.

But must they perform it on public servers (www2 and www3)? Can not they do it on private servers?

They can 'mirror' www2 and www2 before GoogleDance onto two servers, they recalculate PR, and put these two servers online as 'www2' and 'www3'.

It would cut the bandwidth costs here in half from the lack of false update postings!

Doing it publicly allows Google to monitor posts at WebmasterWorld to find out what they did wrong, and take corrective action before exposing flawed results to the general public. ;)

It wouldn't make a difference. If Google didn't do this, then all the same people would be checking www.google.com if it was still 657,000 rather than www2. Though this would cut down on webmasters watching *during* the update praying their site will do better by the end, or praying they don't fall back at the end. ;)

I do believe that Google needs to do updates periodically.

Whether they need to be public I dont´t know. If you, however, would like them to be private there is a simple way for you to simulate just such a private update:

Dont´t look at www2.google and you will be happy. It´s as easy as that.
