my new site shows no descriptions for many of it pages in the search results. pls advise.

That is how google works, look for a title and description after the next update.

Does it only show the URL for the title of the page?

Sometimes google puts URL's in the index that it hasn't spidered yet, so it cant show a title / description for the page.

For example, If one of my pages has a PR1 or something low and has a link to another page, that PR alone might not be enough be enough to warrant a spidering, so in order for google to bumb up thier number of pages indexed, it will just throw that URL in the index, but without anythng else. These kinds of pages are usually ranked very very low in SERPS.

Given that you say your site is new, this might be the case.. Get some inbound links and it most likely will fix itself with the upcoming update.
