Hi

I want to detect if a visitor comes to one of my deep pages from an internal link or google. 50% of my traffic comes into these deep pages from google, and misses important site content. Most do not move to the index page, but stay on the 'relevant' page they have found.

If they come from google, I want to place a small amount of text and two links. If they come from inside my site they will already have seen this information so I don't want to repeat it.

If I write a script that says something like..."if the referer is google show this..." then is this a primitive cloaking? Will I trigger spam filters and get wiped off the palnet?!

How can I safely modify the page content according to referrer?

There's nothing wrong with doing that. Customized content based on referral info is very common.

The key difference is that the extra content you are adding is added to influence how the page ranks. It's added to improve the users experience by providing links to content they might otherwise have missed.

why dont you just put a prominant link back to your index page on deep pages with a reason for them to go there.. if "for more info in blank go to our index"?

If they want to go there it's easy, if they dont want to, its probably doubtful they would do anyting useful there anyway.. a bit like a unqualified lead.. or unqualified traffic.

Google's big concern is not whether you check for a referer of "google", but if you check for a user-agent of "googlebot". And even then I would *guess* that you could get away with some minor *legitimate* differences.

Hi

Thank you for the replies.

So, if I write a script that says:

" If the referrer is from another page of my site don't show this text...."

then there is no mention of googlebot..... but am I still 'cloaking'?

Googlebot will see different content to some other people....

Yes, that is cloaking but as WebGuerilla says it's very common.

I tend to worry a lot about getting a problem in Google, but this wouldn't keep me awake at night.

Brett is using this to highlight the terms one searched for in Google. WebmasterWorld is not banned.
