I just had a thought

Do you think Google awards points for sites that have a history of being "good"?

For example - if your site has never done spam and appears to be a good relevant site and has been doing this for a long time - could that fact play into ranks?

I think PR increases with time but not for the reasons you think.

I think PR goes up over time as more links have accumalated. That and the fact that imagaine how many re-itterations of the PR formula you have gone through over the period of 1 year, so everything just get higher totals over time..

Aside from specific reasons, do you mean is there an "aging" factor like Alta Vista had? With Alta it was normal to first appear in the 50's, then 20's and then on up without doing anything. I haven't seen that with Google, but I have seen sites edge up just slightly, which is probably just normal fluctuation.

I think the answer is yes! there is an effect.

Now i am wondering how to use that to my advantage. hmmm does time = trust?

hmmm does time = trust?

Often pondered that one myself. It would make sense, wouldn't it? A formula that factors in 'number of years that site X has been running without triggering any algo. penalties' would, medium to long term, force more sites to conecentrate on plain and simple quality as opposed to quick fixes. Mat

Whilst I have not kept exact records, it would appear over the 50 sites I handle, that there is an "afterburner effect" at around a year. Rather than a steady progesssion.

It is somewhat difficult to separate out the specific from the general. My feeling is that it is not down to more links over time, as the categories that I am writing sites for have accumulated links well before that point in time, and links are no linger increasing.

jpavery,

I have wondered about this. My PR/incoming links have remained stable for 6 months or so. However, with each update I have seen my rankings climb steadily. I have wondered if points are awarded for: 1) being a good boy (no spam) -and-
2) consistent title (no tweaking and indication of consistent theme)

Any other ideas?

other ideas? sure... other than basic. Here is one thing I strive for - focus and relevant - and trying to not be everything.
