I know this a rookie question, Splash pages suck correct?

It's not impossible to get a good ranking with one, but in general, yes......they suck.

splash pages with giant flash presentations doubly suck.

A homepage should be more of an index page or a table of contents. Most splash pages (Flash included) don't do this. They should give a nice overview of what is in the site. I would stay away from "psychodelic nonsense" as an entry page because most people will quickly leave.
