I wonder how this so called reputed news sites will publish a story without even verrifying the search results :)
It worked then, it doesn't work now.
I would imagine they haven't changed much of the technology checking the inbound link text, rather they changed the algo to check if the page they refer to actually contains that specific term.
Enough pages with the link text "go to hell" pointing to microsoft would produce such results, however if they determined that the microsoft website didn't contain the phrase, it wouldn't count.
