I want to add a headlines feed to our site with relevant content, and it occured to me that I had better get opinions from the google forum before taking a chance.

Will I get penalized for putting a newsfeed on our site?

No, but make sure the most important text is regular title/heading/bodytext and that you get your normal inbound links.

I am not sure how Google treats or indexes the actual text of the newsfeeds. Anyone?

I have a newsfeed I am testing now, but Google is not showing Fresh results today.

Could help if Google considers your specific news page Fresh.

Presumably it depends on the method. If the content is injected into the HTML source (via XSSI, PHP, or whatever) then the robot should be able to read it. If it's a Javascript or IFRAME include then it can't.

Brett's Search Engine Spider Simulator [searchengineworld.com] should give a good idea of what Google will parse, alternatively a text mode browser such as Lynx.
