Webmaster Forums and Google

Doesn't posting here imply SEO and might Google penalize?

Seems that posting in webmaster forums like this and trying to analyze the Google update/algorithms might constitute SEO. If we try to analyze the characteristics of the update and the possible changes to the algorithms in order to improve upon our site's individual rankings, that is SEO. I guess my question is...do you think Google might add penalties for those it can determine participates in these forums (i.e., your url in the profile). Just food for thought.

Google might add penalties

Only if the person says "Oh look! I've found a way to cheat Google" etc....And then, of course, there is the whole issue of making sure the site in someone's profile is actually THEIR site!

No doubt at all that Google comes here to see what "tricks" (so to speak) people are up to - and then they tweak their algo to ensure things stay balanced.

Heh. GoogleGuy posts here and he has Google listed as his homepage. That'd be a real kick in the butt if they penalized people who post here, huh?

I suppose it's safe to say that so long as he doesn't remove the link to Google, then we don't have anything to worry about in that regard.

Well I doubt Google would penalize itself. LOL

Even if Google penalized itself, I cannot see what difference that would make at all.

crobb305, you just started another hard-to-kill urban legend...
I am sure Google employees have more important things to do than going through our posts and profiles and banning those who use techniques that Google does not like.
Google prefers to deal with spam in a systematic way and manual manipulations of index are very rare.

Indexing profiles and slurping up URLS sounds fairly systemmatic to me. No manual labor involved at all. As far as "Urban Legend" I have never heard of such, and I live in the city. LOL

However, you are probably right because the discussion in these forums seems harmless and I have only seen one or two instances of someone saying "hey I found a new way to cheat Googlebot" and in one case GG had a few words to say.

It's rather naive to think Google doesn't manually change things if it sees blatant spam.

Now, I wouldn't say GoogleGuy has better things to do than come here - he just likes to read up on things ;)

GoogleGuy is a regular ( senior ) member here. We have members from all areas of the industry. The board is read on a regular basis by all major engines, by journalists from related industries, even the mainstream media lurks.

Optional anonymity is a base principle of this board.

Many of the more experienced members choose to stay off the radar.

But remember one thing:
Google and any other engine, just like all your competitors, know how to use advanced whois tools. For large corporations, especially those who are somewhat familiar with information retrieval and storing, it's mere childs play to look up on you.

In essence webpromoters and SEs are sitting on different sides of some, not all of the fences running through this landscape.

Google will remove you from the index if they see your site and decide that they do not want to list it. If a Google engineer happens to read here about some interesting new spam tactic then there's likely to be an automatic filter for it at some point.

Blanket penalising WebmasterWorld members would be a rather curious approach to improving index quality, IMO. People come here for all sorts of reasons.

Parts of directory.google.com have been penalised in the recent past.

Actually, we have a blood contract with Google. They promise to leave the members alone as long as we sacrifice one a week to them. Sorry, crobb305, but this happens to be your week.

rcjordan,

Funny. I am glad to see some humor still left on the board after the all the recent posts :)

When are you reporting for duty, crobb305? ;) Okay, to be serious, starec hit it on the money. We lean toward scalable spamfighting whenever we can, and investigating individual posters would be pretty much the ultimate in non-scalable.

To me, the much greater worry is that people who show up here can get misinformation that actually hurts their site. One the main reasons that I show up here is to help dispel myths and try to keep people from taking shortcuts that will just do more harm than good long-term.
