Position on backlinks.

Does it indicate anything?

Although still on www2 and 3 only while the update is going on, my site is currently "ranking" in the top 3 or 4 for backlinks to lots of related sites. The site's topic is non-competitive, so pretty much all the sites carry links to each other. Why then, is my site so consistently high up?

I think ranking of backlinks is done as if it were a regular search in Google. Therefore if you're looking at backlinks for this:

link:shsuidSTRINGsjks:www.somedudessite.com

It's using the domain as the search term. Therefore, not only does PR come into play, but so do page placement (how high on the list of outbound links is the site), does the actual URL of the site appear on the page, or do you Anchor the site name or other keywords? Etc.

Technically, if you're second on the guy's "linkto" list, you could surmise that if you did a regular search for "somedudessite" (no .com), you'd be on the list in second place. (If it's a term that might bring up several or many different sites, then those results will get mixed into the "pure" results you were looking at in the linkto page and you'd need to get into a lot more complicated approach, but the theory is the same).
