New site, how long to get into Google?

Just been working with a new client for 2 weeks now. His site has been added to DMOZ, after onl 8 days. Has also had a couple of hits from Google, however I cannot find him on a Google search. Do new sites go in and out of Google even before an update?

The DMOZ listing is on a PR7 page and he also has a link from a PR5 page.

There are roughly two dates per month to remember - the 5th and the 21st. The first is when your site needs to be crawled around, and the second is roughly when it will show up in the database. So if you get your site up by the 5th (roughly) it should be listed later in the month, but can sometimes take a second month (no one knows why).

I would add on to jaytierney said in that after a Google update, you still maynot see your listing until everything has settled down. Google has 2 staging areas were updates are transitioned into the primary Google site. There some good information on in several of the threads

Some people report crawls well before the 5th, too. Some simultaneously with or even prior to the start of the update, and there's also been activity mid-month. See

Everflux: mid-month Google activity [webmasterworld.com]

I *try* to have everything ready by the 20th. Chances are your client's site may be picked up from the ODP listing, but when that will migrate over to Google is uncertain. Keep in mind, though, that the site may appear as a result of the ODP listing for a day or so and then disappear.

Also, sometimes just the ODP listing isn't enough to qualify enough by Page Rank, so while you may luck out, it can't hurt to get a few more quality links by the 20th, just to be on the safe side.

For dealing with a client, it's probably best to give yourself wide berth and tell them it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks, just so you're not pinned down too much.

From my experience, I'd tend to agree with Marcia.

I am showing a new site already in the results...although not like I had expected. PR0. (Crosses fingers...and if wrong has some poison words for the next update)

No, it's not a penalty...just that I ended up getting indexed quick..before the Big 'G' decided to re-index/update their PR.

I've seen the PR0 before...and it isn't always a penalty. In fact sometimes it's very good! (Crosses fingers again...hopin to prove that PR0's aren't always bad...)
