Internal Backwards Links

Internal backward links

Does anyone know the definitive reason as to why some portions of a website will show internal links on Google, while other parts of a site show no backward/internal links?
Is there something special that should be done within a site or directory to ensure or aid in the help of establishing internal linking?

The backlink magical number is 4 -- Google will only display PR4 pages and above as backlinks

I think it is actually a high 3. You will come across some 3s in the backlinks.

I appreciate the answers but I have to disagree on the pagerank theory for backwards links. I have certain directories within our site that are virutually identical to other directories. Some show backwards links between the pages in that directory yet others do not. Just can't figure this one out.

Disagree all you like, but it is more than a theory. Most get practical results out of it.

Do you mean those directories have pages with virtually the same content?

If so, I urge you to read here [webmasterworld.com] for a little while. Duplicate content can harm a site.

Enjoy!

The similar page filter will hide some backlinks coming from the same site. Disabling this should display all pages with backlinks that are above the PR threshhold (whatever that may be).

I'm sure there will be sound reasons why Google doesn't show all backlinks.

Us webmasters would be pounding their servers working out PR + links on our sites and all competitor sites! Then be working out all the on the page stuff and to fluff those SERPs up ;)

If you want to search for your site and its not returning any higher PR links with link:site.com then just type site.com and click on "pages that contain the term"...works for me.

Also, those older threads about working out the log....maybe if all links were shown that would leave the algo exposed a bit? I don't know....either way it seems <PR3 links don't have much sway.
