Alot of similarities between the two.

What do you guys think about this new Australian based search engine called Lookle.com?
Appearance and results seem very similar. It will be interesting to see what happens.

They certainly seam to be folowers of google and their results are pretty similar. It has to be said that surely by having their site so similar to google that will be swamped by the giant. i would have thought it would have made better sence to try and be a bit unique.

I don't see much similarily, other than the fact that both sites are "stark" and they use the hackneyed drop-shadow effect.

But some people have been advocating simple web design for years. It seems that the era of super complicated homepages is starting to die out, and the new look everybody wants is the look of simplicity.

Adult sites, often the starting point for most great web ideas, learned ages ago that there is NO better homepage than the three button homepage (members, preview, join.) Simple site = popular site. Complex site = dazzling, confusing, and sends people running from where they came.

The lesson: people want simplicity. If Lookle and Google are the only major sites with simple homepages, then that just means that they are the first sites of a new wave of HTML design. (After my sites, of course!)

Google apparently believes Lookle looks a little too much like them:

Google threatens Lookle.com with Trademark Suit [it.mycareer.com.au]

The coolest thing about this story is that you heard it at WebmasterWorld first!

Hello,
As a first time visitor I'd just like to say wow! what a fantastic forum and resource. Well done!
My name is Alan Rogers, I'm the Owner, Founder and driving force behind LOOKLE.com search engine.
I'm here after having been invited by “Woz” and welcome any questions that Internet users may wish to ask me about my search engine.
We've been getting a lot of press lately after I put out two press releases, the second concerning GOOGLE.com's letter to me from their legal counsel threatening legal action. I’ve decided to publish these two releases at [lookle.com...] as they contain information about LOOKLE and also GOOGLES demands which I figure will be interesting to members here.

doesn't particularly look like Google to me...somewhat different results too...significantly smaller database I would guess

I have the same reservations that I have about a large number of search engines...we don't need 5 or 6 identical SEs...we need a whole bunch who specialise in producing different types of search result...if Lookle is to thrive and survive it needs to develop a very clear identity...and not just in terms of image...there has to be a reason to use that SE in particular

Congratulations Mr Rogers!

Your search engine does a better job than Google on finding inbound links to my sites!

I notice the PPC publicized on the site...are those sites which are paying for placement mixed right in there with no identification or has the PPC yet to be implemented?

Our bid results are labelled with a text link (Lookle Bid) the link throws up a pop-up box that clearly explains what is going on.
e.g. Type in a term such as ... money ... to see.
