No changes to my home page. Yet PR goes from 5 to 4 to 5 to 4 . . . Any reason for this?

Could be because you are right on the edge...I think everyone fluctuates, just most are not so close to the edge that it pushes them one way or another.

Also, it could be that sites that link to you are fluctuating, which makes you do the same

Google ranking by inbound links is a big problem. If you look at the category for my site, compare the number one ranked site to my site. The no 1 site is a simple advertising brochure site mass produced and marketed. The ranking is derived from links that were mostly paid for. They are meaningless as to the value of the site.
My site slipped from no three to about 20 for no reason. The links went from 56 to 14 on my site. I post on a message board that links my site for each message and some of those showed up last month. No none are showing and no links are sowing for other pages of my site.

I noticed that many backward links show for pages of the same site.

The ranking system is fatally flawed. Why else would people come up with techniques to beat the system.

Face it, there is no real way to objectively rank pages other than in person peer type of review.

Due to the popularity of Google it is necessary to continue to attempt to maintain a good ranking. Google is an excellent search engine but the ranking system is flawed-big time!

Do you honestly think people are objective????

Google, while flawed, is the most relevant search engine out there.

lawman,

Were the rankings down this month? I seen mine go up pre-update....had been steady for a month before.

Before that was the update where people had reported "PR shifting" downwards.

So I guess there are a few blips from what you would expect for growth and tweaking on Google's side changing PR.

I don't think people are objective. People, however, should determine the difference between a custom and useful site and a mass produced brochure type site. Google is unable to make this distinction with its ranking system and ranked the brochure site number one based on paid for links. Check it out for yourself!

HackingLawyer: If people wanted human reviewed sites, then they should probably use directories. Any search engine will necessarily work on an automated algo.

Thanks, but that response essentially begs the question. Google is also a directory and that is the problem. In the relevant catagory the top sites can be worthless.

I am not advocating human reviewed sites but pointing out the gross insufficiency of Googles ranking system.
