How often does Google's Imagebot crawl for new images? Would there be a reason some images are not indexed?
Take for instance my photo site, <snip> The webpages get crawled on a monthly basis by Google, some of the pages are even visited daily by crawlerxx.googlebot.com. But not once in the past year or so has Google's Imagebot stopped by.
The images within my site are linked like normal images, <snip>.
Behind the scenes it is actually a script returning the JPG raw data, they aren't real files. That shouldn't matter though, because Google can't even know that until it has requested the file, and even that hasn't happened.
Any ideas why the Imagebot isn't visiting and indexing the images? Most of them have ALT tags, and even the Content-Description data is provided.

I've just checked a couple of sites that I host. They were last checked by Googlebot-Image in May.
