Meta tag question

I thought Google didn't support them

I just read the following in
[google.com...] :

"Supports standard meta tag fields, enabling search narrowing and filtering based on meta tag values. Also can return meta tag data for display in search results".

So, does this only apply to the search appliance? From other posts I've read here and elsewhere, I understood that meta tags were irrelevant to Google results.

Remember, the Search Appliance isn't Google - it's a separate product. Google does "support" meta tags, though it doesn't use them for ranking. (There is still debate out there as to whether it ignores them completely, or not).

The appliance, on the other hand, is designed for you to search your own intranet or internet web site, is separate from the google database, and can be configured a myriad of ways. While it contains many similar technologies, it, obviously, is not going to use PR for the simple fact that no sites outside of your intranet could possibly link to pages within your Intranet.
