Only "some" links count

Why is that

For a very long time, I have wondered why Google only lists "some" of the sites that are linked to mine. In addition, they have steadfastly ignored my DMOZ listing which has been in existence for several years. If DMOZ is supposed to be such an important part of the whole Google PR deal ... what reason would Google have to not include that link among many others?

Can anyone shed some light on either question.

What is the page rank of your dmoz cat and how many links are on it? Do other sites in the cat show the dmoz link?

Well isn't that interesting! There are nine others listed in the category and none have a DMOZ listing noted on Google. Why is that?

Sorry, I don't know what the page rank is ... I am on MacIntosh and Google hasn't made a toolbar for us yet.:(

Is the catagory not in the google directory? I would think it would be there. If it is you can see your Page rank there. If it isn't please sticky me the cat. I am very intrigued.

Yes, the category is listed in Google and my page rank is 5 ... but I can't see what the page rank is for the category. I have sticky mailed you the category.

The dmoz cat has a PR of 4. This should not effect it showing up in backwards links. Since the cat and your site is in the google directory the only thing I can think of is that the google directory link and the dmoz link are apart of the half that are not shown. I am almost 100% certain you are getting link credit. All the sites have the catagory icon lit up on the toolbar. To me that says google knows. Maybe someone else has seen something similar and can add more.

Hmmmm. Brett didn't get it either when he tried to check about a year ago. I just thought someone may have an answer by now.

Anyone know why Google "selects" some links to credit you with and not others? Case in point: I found a good (relevant) link with great PR and convinced the site owner to expand his links to include the products I sell. My competition soon followed suit and got links on his site. Google credits their sites with the link ... but not mine??? I was there first!

Just curious as to why Google lists "some" links and not others and why some sites get credited with some of the same links for which I do not get credit?

rmjvol when you do a backwards link query link:www.widget.com google tells you that it is showing you some number out of about twice as much as some number. You only get to see half of your incoming links.

Just a shot in the dark, but are all the links pointing to the "EXACT" same url.

"www.domain.com" not "domain.com" nor "shopping.domain.com", etc..

I believe the links should all be the same throughout the web, if you want to receive maximum PR.

Thanks Korkus2K. I had not heard it referred to that way. I've always just thought it was a bug in that G was doubling the link count at the top & showing the correct number of links. Thinking back, it only started displaying like that in the last year or so, right?

Do you really think it's truly only showing half of the links?

I'm quite sure the actual links are "the first half", and there is no "other half". Google began not showing the "second half" in 2001/01 and at that time I noticed that the number of links seemed to have doubled... but I still think the actual number of links may be around half of what Google says.

There are other links that may count for PR, that are not counted in this report: the links from pages with PR under 4.
