Google still caching an old page 5 months on.

Back in March I moved my domain from my current ISP to a new server host. I also cleaned up my links and got rid of any mirror sites etc. since I had dropped badly in the ranking with Google.

At that time there was a <blah.net/~widget> with my old server (blah.net)which used to resolve automatically to my main domain - <widget.com>. I placed a meta-refresh on that page and included a robots.txt "User agent disallow" - since my ISP tech. had stated he could/would not do a 301 re-direct for me.

Now Google is STILL showing <blah.net/~widget> as the principal page in their cache when I type in my domain url. It is also showing up at the no#1 position for my main search terms while my domain itself is lingering on the 3rd or 4th page of the results - previously had a PR5

Numerous emails to support, spam, googlebot, etc. to try and resolve this issue have received only auto-responses but no action.

Can anyone suggest what I can do now - Please :(

on the redirect page, put a link to your new url.

this wil help just a little bit,
but little is better than nothing at all.

Thanks for that but a meta-refresh always shows the url to which the
user is to go. ( or it SHOULD DO).

The main thing about re-directs is that Google does not like them and regards them as sort of "doorway pages". It is my understanding, however, that they will allow meta-refresh - Any tech types out there who can confirm this?

Sounds like Google is still using the old DNS because your old ISP has not removed your domain from their DNS local zone. If this is the case, Google keeps trying to find you via the old IP address and your old ISP is saying, yes the site is here.

You might want to contact your old ISP and make sure that you talk to someone that understands how DNS works and find out if the "local zone" data of your domain has been removed from their DNS server. When it's removed from their DNS server, it will automaticly update to the new IP address. ISP's forget or just don't take the time to remove "local zone" data from their DNS server and this causes problems not only for search engines, but anyone that's trying to visit your site via their service.

P.S. Send me a sticky mail with your old and new ISP name and/or IP addresses and I'll check both to see if I see any problems via my DNS server.

Hey there kneelsit, welcome to Webmaster World. Glad to see you make it by. ;)

You may want to try this route...

Upload a robots.txt file to your root. Within it, you'll have this directive...

User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /~widget/

Or the direct path to the page in question. Once you've uploaded the robots.txt file with that directive, proceed to...

Remove URL from Google [services.google.com]

Go through the steps shown and within 24 hours that page will get removed. That has been my experience using it twice over the past couple of months.

Good luck!

P.S. The best way to do this would be to use a 301 redirect. Maybe you should consider another host? ;)

Hi Pageone, Thanks for the welcome :)

Have done ALL that you suggest a couple of weeks back.
and sent in a message to Google to remove.

Just went in now to www2.google and it seems they have finally got my cache correct BUT there is still a penalty operating on my main site
since when my url is typed in and you click on "pages that link to" it shows a line of code only, despite the fact that I have over 200 pages linking to my site. (see Alltheweb).

Funny thing though is that the old /~widget site is still showing up as #1 for my main search words - which is fine in one way but I just wish that Google would get around to re-instating my MAIN site back where it always was at #1 - got even less hair now than 10 months back when this first started. :)

I'm just a poor struggling inventor and would like to get just a little recognition again.
