I have to get a new domain for a client for which most of the good domains containing the key phrase have already been registered. So I have to suggest a good domain from SEO point of view which google will like better.

I am thinking that I suggest phrase-key.com instead of key-phrase-xyz.com Am I right here ?

Since my choice would reverse the order, will it be a factor much rest assured I work as I would normally do for link pop and other basics.

I would like to add that a search in google gives 835,000 results for key phrase and 829,000 for phrase key but the client says that very few in their industry would search for phrase key.

Opinions and suggestions are welcome.

i am a relative noobie in comparison to the wisdom you'll see on this board... but based soley on the human search angle... i would expect that if *people* search for key-phrase as opposed to phrase-key, that you'd likley want to be where the searches are... right? :D

my 2 cents...

Bearing in mind... web site (page) content is the primary factor in ranked position, the order of words in the domain has only one real negative affect.

If quotes are used on the phrase, the domain would add weight if in the right order and nothing if wrong order.

key-word or word-key will have little difference or effect in most incidences and in most search engines.

Is this better than key-word-and-something.com. I would say so but points to branding considering is a more likely reason rather than search optimization potential.

Identifying longer phrases that have considerable use would be the exception.

An good example >> science <<, and >> science fair << are much broader topics but are used less often than >> science fair project << so the longer domain targets better and more. This would my only consideration to using a longer domain name.

In the end a branding domain is probably far better, and the shorter the better. Although a keyword enriched domain will (may) help add weight for better ranked position the gains are far less the that when a past visitor can remember the address (amazon.com really doesn't have anything to do with the river (or big muscular women) but visitors go there often for online shopping. Direct as well as via a search engine, but if it were:

shopping-from-a-to-z-at-amazon.com or amazon-the-worlds-largest-online-store.com, how difficult are these to remember.
