How many matches does Google really return?

How many matches can google return at best?

Hi Guys,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks now, it's so informative, I thought I must sign up :)

I have a question;

When I search for the word; 'horoscope' in Google I get 1.9 million matches. Now when I go to the tenth page, I see the figure '90' somewhere in the long URL. When I replace this figure with
250, I get the 25th page and the urls ranking 251st to 260th. Finally when I replace this figure with 900 I reach the last of the results!

All other matches are similar to the matches already shown, Google says, so they're not displayed but I can click on the link and see them. When I click on the link I again get 1.9 million matches.

I repeat the above exercise and replace the figure with 990, I reach the end, there are no further matches shown and no apparent way to see the other 1.9 million? Am I missing something here?

My apologies if I'm asking something that has already been answered.

I will appreciate any feedback on the above.

Thanks! :)

Vikram,

As far as I know there's no way to get more than 1,000 results from either Google's Web interface or the API. I think it's an arbitrary restriction to conserve resources.
