Hi folks,
I have a small prob with my new site.

The first piece of body text visible to Google is loaded from a PHP include file that makes up the left navbar, and not from the main body text.

Can I just use a 1 pixel spacer image and put a description in the ALT tag for Google's sake.

I understand this method used a lot would irritate visually impaired users, but wondered if it is deemed acceptable just once?

Also, do any of the search engines consider this spamming? (if so, which ones?) .

Just for the record, I am entirely against spamming, cloaking, SEO cheating of any kind. Just wondered what you guys thought about using an ALT for one image just so I can get Google to describe my site right!

P.S. Great forum, just joined :-)

I wouldn't recommend it. Also keep in mind that the order of how your elements are rendered at the browser level doesn't really matter unless you've mastered the art of css and content positioning.

Google is going to pull snippets from your copy on the page. It does not use the meta description like other SE's do so your description may end up being a hodge podge of words based on the users search query.

Yes, 1 pixel .gifs stuffed with copy are considered spam. Yes, I believe some engines have a filter for this method of keyword stuffing. Nothing is deemed acceptable, just once. I liked that one! ;)

Thanks for that :-)

Yeh, I guess just once is no excuse!

Oh well, I guess I better try re-jigging some stuff.
