If I create a master site with many categories and then create new sites that relates to each category and then put a link from each on a links page---Is that cross linking

EX: Master Site categories(this site would have info on all categories)

Dog Food
Cat Food
Pet Food
Hamster food

EX: New Sites
New site 1: site dedicated to dog food
New site 2: site dedicated to cat food
New site 3: site dedicated to pet food

If all sites had a favorite liks page that listed all the other site is this cross linking.

EX: Master site would link to dog food cant food pet food and hamster food

dog food would link to master site cat food and pet food and master site

I awould appreciate any feedback. I looked at old forums and can not understand what they mean.

Sure, that's crosslinking. All it means is interchanging links between a set of sites. It might be two sites, it might be four, it might be 20, whatever.

What's important, in my opinion, isn't that you don't do it, but that it isn't all you do with regard to linking. What you want to avoid is the creation of a "closed circle;" a group of sites that only link to, and only have links from, other sites in the circle. So in your example you'd be best off if you developed outside backward links for each of the three new sites as well as for the "master site."
