Google PR Accuracy

are internal pages really ranked?

Maybe I misunderstood a post ... would like some clarification that I can't seem to locate in my searches here.

Does Google PR on the toolbar (although I have heard not exact) only take into consideration the index page ranking and then give the internal pages an arbitrary number that is not really ranked.

For example: If a website index page has a PR6 and the internal page has a PR5...if a link to your site is on the PR5 internal page of another site...is it counted as in inbound link of PR5 value...or is that internal page just given an arbitrary number based on it's website index page PR value amd really have no PR value at all?

The confusion comes from an earlier question, when I asked about getting indexed on an search page for my keywords in Teoma that has a PR5, and it was suggested that the page actually has no PR value, and that the real value resides on only the index page.

Can someone clarify this for me, as I never really "got it"...

Thank you,
Linda

HI Linda

As I understand it, Google assigns a Pagerank to every page and that is used in conjunction with other factors in determining the rank of that page when words relevant to that page are searched on.

No, PR is calculated for each individual page.

If you view a page that has not yet had a PR score calculated, but comes from a domain that has other pages with a PR score, then the Toolbar will make a guess. That guess is always a one level drop per directory.

So if your home page is a PR7, and you then put up a new page at yourdomain.com/directory/newpage.html, the Toolbar will show a PR6 for that page even if it has never been crawled. That score is just a guess. It will be replaced with the real score once it hasd been crawled and all of its linking relationships have been calculated.
