Hi Jacon,
welcome to WebmasterWorld, the link: command has always been known to be a bit buggy - It can be a good overall indictor of how you are going in regards to inbound links but take the results with a pinch of salt.

ferrari360....thanks....the thing is though, when my links disappear, so does my position for my best key word

It could be that some of the sites linking to you are moving back and forth in PR value (between PR3 and PR4), so when they're high they show up and when they're low they don't. The more likely answer, however, is that the link: command in Google is just plain weird sometimes... and of course, if this was only happening during the last month then that makes sense (as results were shifting non-stop for weeks).
