PR 6 is way above average for PageRank, congratulations.

Pagerank starts at 1 and ends at 10 with 10 being great.

When you get a 10 remember that link :)

Now my question for the specialists, it seems I still haven't got this PR thing right:
I have just found a site with 4 (!) incoming links, no dmoz and Yahoo listings and without any body text on the main page, just graphics. But it has PR 6. How is this supposed to happen?

what are the PR's of the pages the incoming links are coming from?

That's probably the point: one with 6, two with 5 and one with 4. Is that enough to get PR6?

By the way, the incoming link with PR6 is a hidden one from a search engine optimisation company's main page (1x1 pixel graphic).

it looks like its enough...
eventually the SEO company using that tactic will be picked up though and the PR will probably drop..

Nik21, a bit dated but nevertheless most of the top ones are there:

web.mit.edu is one I had not seen before.

Is there a better "tactic" than the 1x1 pixel?

Who says there is a 1x1 graphic problem? There is no indication anywhere that it would be. We've had this debate before, and there are millions of pages with 1x1 pix graphics on them for crawler purposes.

There is nothing wrong with using a 1x1 graphic to get a high graphic site crawled. No se has ever been found to drop a site based on a 1x1 graphic. The closest we've come is the old "blueline.gif" in auto generated spam pages.

btw: if you want to report spam, use Google. We don't do spam reports or "shop the competition" here. Thats both for your privacy and security as well as the other guys.

I had or have no intention of reporting spam, so I didn't further specify the company. I just wondered...

PR6 is definetely a good place to be.

You can be writing content, and know that you are not going to have to worry "too much" about PR flushing your pages down the toilet.

My humble advice : Keep an eye on your navigation structure and the sites you link to.....PR is like liquid and it will spill everywhere unless you direct it accordingly ;)

Hey, that's a good way of looking at it. Avoid dilution of the concentrate.

Yes bluemi, one link from a high PR6 page with few links will give you PR6.

This is the big difference between PageRank and old fashioned link popularity. In PageRank, links from high PR pages help much more than links from low PR pages.

Brett, I guess some se purists would see this different. I haven't been around in this forum for long but it seems to me that elsewhere at Webmasterworld it is kind of common sense that any code solely used for search engine enhancement but invisible and therefore without use for the site visitor can be regarded as spam. There isn't much difference between a 1x1 pixel link and white text on white background. Either both of it is spam, or none. Anyway, it's not me to decide this... Actually it's easy: anything seen as spam by Google is spam, and anything not seen as spam isn't spam... Only problem is that Google tends to change its policy on this from time to time.

1 pixel gifs are also useful as traffic counters.

Many site monitors use them too.

How is PR rating actually calculated...?

i mean is it like :

1 link incoming = PR 1

3 links = PR 2

10 links = PR 3

or is it simply a calculation of the PR being passed on by the linking sites, or a mix...?

Would be interesting to know...

also, in google - how important is PR...i know that it is very important, but i would love to see a simple breakdown of how the index is ranked...

Yes, link transfers the PageRank of the linking page to the linked to page, divided by the number of links on the page, minus a small proportion.

A lot of people would love that.:)

There is a wide range of view here. Your best approach is to read the threads here and come up with your own opinion.

Hi Guys,

Sorry if I had the wrong impression of a 1x1 pixel link.

But from a practical point of view why would an SE be interested in providing any weight to a 1x1 pixel image link when it has no use to a surfer?
