Pay for an ad... get the shaft?

Banner ads are everywhere - but are they potential harm to a web site without the PR to spare (PR6 lets say)?

What if you were to buy a banner ad on a web site that features your banner on every page of that site?

That's an incoming link from every page of that site.

That's a bad thing in Googles eyes. Aint it?

That then becomes a bad thing in a SEO strategy. Doesn't it?

Just something I was thinking about while laying on the highway during rush hour.

I used to serve ads via a third party advertiser.....but the link was buried in javascript so that would not affect pagerank.

Though, perhaps it is worth bearing in mind that having the jscript on the page may cause a change in the pages ranking (though maybe not PR).

In regards to a readable URL, I guess the normal rules apply as they would to any other link. If PR is sacrificed, maybe that is the "price" you pay for having advertising on a page .... after all (jokingly) everyone hates ads ;)

Good topic though, but alias I don't display any :)
