What's that all about then?

Amazon has PR3.
It has 50,900 incoming links.
It comes top on a search for 'books'.

Why is its page rank so low and what difference does it make anyway?

Apologies for my ignorance, I'm new to all of this!

I don't know why it is so low, and it appears to make no difference, which should tell a lot about page rank right there.

amazon's page rank appears low, but recall that when you go to amazon.com, you immediately taken deep within the directory structure, which decreases the apparent page rank. Amazon's page rank for their home directory is actually quite high.

check the relative directory Pagerank (the toolbar here is different from the normal toolbar, thank you Google)

[directory.google.com...]

Also I think that many of the Amazon adverts on other sites/pages link back to the sub-pages. Anyway 50,900 links is not nothing..
compare: [webmasterworld.com...]

yeah, i think amazon is a PR9....they have 6 /'s in the URL when you are redirected....maybe thats just an approximate toolbar value.....nothing really to do with the PR in that respect (not surE)
