It was previously listed near the top of google for various keyphrases and out of the blue has been banned.
I cannot think of any reason why this has happened. I really need to know how I can get it back on google - what is the best way to resolve this?

You should check the Google cache by typing cache:www.your-domain.com to check it. Google seem to have changed considerably from their old full-cycle approach to updating.
Sites often disappear from Google, you might want to consider whether your Web server could have been down for a few minutes during the last few weeks. As lazyz points out, getting banned is unusual.
I typed in the full URL into google and get the Sorry, no information is available for the URL '...' page. does this mean I was banned?
Lazyz - I do have the toolbar, but no page rank bar, how do I get this?
Is there any other reason I could have got banned with no foul play? (except for the server being down, which I guess is a possibility).

Was your site just included?
Have you had any server problems in the last month?
And the page rank is greyed out, so you are not in the index any more.
Did or do you have a SEO company or do you promote your site yourself?
(I don't have a tool bar from where I am working today)
I think you are a victom of "being dropped for unknown reasons"
It sometimes happens. Sometimes the spider just doesn't make it to your site in time. Sometimes it is a server-side error with your host. The reasons are many and it does happen.
It happened to me before. Several of my domains were dropped in the middle of the month. My host had a connection problem. Google dropped every one of my host's servers. It happened over-night.
Give it until the next index before you assume you've been banned.
I promoted the site myself. I thought most s/e's didn't read comments anyway? And can you really get banned just for that and maybe the occurance of one word so many times?
The site was in the top 2-3 for 'chinese porcelain art' for about a year with no real change to the code.
Does using software like Web Position Gold (not for the actual submission) get you into trouble?

While I have no reason to disbelieve this statement, I'd still be cautious, particularly if the nature of your WPG search would allow your site to be identified. Keep in mind that Google said it wasn't targeting users of a particular directory management software title, but 90+% of the identifiable users ended up with PR0. I would recommend doing automated queries sparingly, or not at all.
I agree with the rest that a one-time gray PR probably indicates some kind of self-correcting hiccup. If the site doesn't come back in the next update, then the possibility of some kind of ban is greater, though still not certain.
I'm interested in the comments that say that my site is likely to have been banned. I notice that it has 148 backward links. Is this a good indication that it has been blacklisted? Also, are there any other methods of finding out if it's been banned.

I would say so, to show backward links they have to know about your domain [if it's just not in the index then it will show no links with the link command]. It could just be a glitch but I have a method that so far has proved 100% accurate in indentifying banned domains, this one shows banned. The method may be flawed, I simply haven't had enough data to test with.
What I plan to do is buy a seperate domain and send an email to all those sites linking to the original site requesting that they change the link to the new domain.
There's a problem with this though - when I check the backward links it says there are 148 but displays only 2. I then click the 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' button and it still only shows 3 out of 148!
Is there a way of getting a list of all of them or is this another of google's ways of punishing you and making you start completely from scratch again? Obviously I don't know where all the links came from!

I think we'd all like some reassurance that a competitor cannot get your site banned by running any type of rank checking on Google for your site?
I'm sure that people running competetive sites will check their competition to compare results with their own so what's stopping my main competitor from getting my site 'turned off' if they were checking my rank for various keywords on Google?

Fact: There is nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. Your rank and your inclusion are dependent solely on factors under your control as a webmaster, including content choices and site design.
Google has always maintained that competitors cannot effect someone elses sites. If domains are being banned for rank checking then clearly this is not the case.
This would mean that fact one and two on their fact and fiction page are false.
Umm...D'ya realize you just encouraged unscrupulous people to run WebPosition Gold checking out there competitors sites 24/7 through Google? Sales of WebPosition Gold should go way up now that you just told the world how to get the competition penalized at Google.

We take precautions to make sure that people can't just use a rank checker to hurt a competitor. I'm not aware of any report where an IP or domain was dropped for using a rank-checker where it turned out to be someone hurting a competitor. The domain in question was using WebPosition Gold.
Your company seem to be happy selling advertising to companies who sell Web Position Gold. A quick search is showing over 563,000 results, 1 premium ad, and several ad words ads. Some seem to have very good PR also.
