Input" the " in search frame, and you can see it say: about 2,690,000,000 results.

Any other random search result could give you over 1,000,000 sites or pages.

Who need so many results? I guess maybe only 1% of persons need over 100 items. But almost all search engines make their largest efforts to collet more and more....Are they crazy?

I don't know if they are going crazy, but that is how a database works. Plus, I really like to know how many competitors I have for any given query.

I would hate to use a search engine that says, "Don't worry, we ignore half the web because our database only supports 1,000,000,000 pages."

Large databases are handy for more specific searches.

At best, Google will return only 1000 results for a query.

I guess they reckon that's enough for anybody -- though some SEO specialists may disagree.

Why do search engines want to record more pages? Presumably the same reason people compiling phone books want every phone number....I don't need a database with a billion phone numbers in it; but that's probably the only way to create a database that does have all the ones I'll need.

There are still plenty of Web searches that bring no results at all or only one result (I mean, that's what the game of Googlewhacking is all about! :->) What is the search engine supposed to do, say "Oh, I've indexed this string on enough pages, I'm not going to index it anymore"?
